As is customary during the past 10 years, from the 2007-2007 season that AC Milan crowned, players and coaches have to move to the VIP area on the podium to receive the Cup and medals from the Football Association Europe (UEFA). Then, the champion brought the Cup to the stadium surface to celebrate the victory.
From this season, the awards after the Europa League and Champions League final will also be held on the stadium surface. Accordingly, UEFA officials will move from the stands down to the stadium surface to give the Cup and the medals to the players. The podium will be assembled in about five minutes after the match ends.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: "From this year onwards, the stadium surface is the place where players are awarded prizes. This change creates a sense of achievement for the players who are celebrating where they are trying to win".
"Officials will come down from the stands to meet the players after the final. The players can have fun together on the field in the witness of the fans", added Ceferin. "This change will help all fans on the field have a better perspective when witnessing the Cup lift of the winning team".
